Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender on the planet by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before reaching turning one. His grandfather introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to pickup everything he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the detrimental comments from others kill his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a common thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he destroyed many of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil says that he’s picking up skills every single day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. Phil admits to making blunders in each session of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Although Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he likes winning money games on a normal basis.
