Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved gambling on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games while playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played many hours and don’t win most times. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly compete against one another. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
