Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved playing different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played many hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The definite advancement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often play against each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world ever. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
