Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an overwhelming array of wagering choices and because you have many individuals trying for the high, along with a few trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha hi/lo.
