Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming range of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high, as well as a few battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
