Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus even more on the game.

The real advancement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge one another. He was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
