Stu Ungar is thought to be by many to the greatest NL Texas hold’em Poker gambler ever.

The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in ‘53 and started betting poker prior to reaching his teens.

The young gambler began playing gin and at the age of ten had won his first gin rummy tournament, while on holiday with his parents. By the time he turned fourteen the small poker genius had become a professional and dropped out of school.

In 1954 Stu Ungar entered the history books by succeeding $10,000 in a gin tournament without losing a single hand, a record which still appears in New York today.

The quick talking superstar has been compared, in poker terms, to athletic superstars like Joe Namath and Kobe Bryant. Stu had a genuine talent for betting poker but regardless of his successes in Holdem poker, he favored wagering gin.

Stu once said that there may a few day be a far better No Limit Holdem player than him except he could not see how anyone could ever be a better gin player.

In ‘80 Stu was put on the world map as one of the greatest Hold’em Poker players in the planet when he was crowned World Poker Champion for the very first time. Amazingly it was the 1st time he had entered the tournament.

The following year he put aside any thoughts that it had been a fluke, by effectively defending his title. And in 1997 Stu set the record by winning his 3rd World poker championship.

Except this poker legend also battled with substance abuse and a year right after winning his 3rd title Stu Ungar past away in his hotel room. According to medical professionals, he had passed away from cardiac arrest which was caused by his lifestyle.

Stu had began with nothing but his skill and expertise for the casino game which made this poker good a millionaire several times over.
