Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha High-Low offers an amazing assortment of betting choices and because you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi lo.
